The longest running gold mine in the US is closing so we went for a tour of it.  It is called the Homestake Gold Mine.

This year, 2001, is actually the last year that tours will be given as the mine is being sold to the government for an underground physics testing laboratory.

My mom is dying to know if this is where her great-grandfather, Austin Thomas Byrne, went to work in 1880 after graduating as a civil engineer.


Also spent time with some "wild" prairie dogs…...

….and some "wild" burros in Custer State Park!
