July 11, 2001
Weinberg-King State Park, Augusta, IL
The drive through Canada, Detroit and past Chicago was uneventful and we have arrived in Augusta, IL.  Augusta is the home of my dad's paternal ancestors.  They were pioneers that settled western Illinois in the 1830's.

Somewhere out there was the Old Crain Farm (1835-1950)

Augusta, IL Town Hall

Abe Lincoln spoke here.

Farmers in Illinois look a lot different than I expected!

We settled in at Weinberg-King State Park which is managed by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.  The park is right down the street from the Crain Farm of my ancestors.  The campground is out of this world--filled with whippoorwill, fireflies, frogs and bats--and it is deserted.

No one is here except us and the Park Ranger.  It is a scenic area with rolling hills along a meandering, picturesque Williams Creek.  The average depth of Williams Creek is 3 feet.  The majority of trees are locust, and Osage orange, although pine, honeysuckle and walnut trees have been planted.  There are huge walnut trees over me right now!  I am going to go catch fireflies.  Bye!
